Navigating Uncertainty: in Palliative Care Practice

Uncertainty is a pervasive and defining feature of palliative care which arises when individuals are unable to attribute clear meaning to clinical events, symptoms or care processes. This ambiguity is often amplified by the complexities of multiple co-existing conditions, fragmented care pathways and the unpredictable course of progressive illness. When unaddressed, uncertainty may negatively affect psychological wellbeing, adaptation to illness, and communication.
